I hopped on at 5:30pm yesterday (146.460) in Lafayette and gave a shout out to reach UB. Heard him but it sounds like we got crossed up with somebody from Longmont trying to chat with us as well. By the time it all cleaned up I was headed across 93 near rocky flats and it felt like I was in dead air. I flipped it to 145.460 and listened but was to nervous to talk over the repeater.

After my class in lakewood ended at 9:30 I got back onto 146.460 to see if I could hail somebody and couldn't, so i flipped to the green channel to listen to the cops chit chat about drunks running around.

I think I learned not to put a shout out at full power since the folks listening may not have the same range I do that I am reaching them on simplex with.

This morning (7:30) I set it to 25 watts and gave a call that I was mobile but didin't hear any word back.

I'll slowly graduate to chatting on the repeater.. maybe tonight after work to see if anybody is listening. I'm slowly getting more comfortable on the radio

I'm following this since I'm finally getting my radio too. I appreciate what's been covered already and would like to hear an explanation of frequency basics and repeater use. Yes, I should remember this from the class but that was a long time ago.

I've never heard of a call sign that started with an F. I thought they all started with a K, N or W for amateur use.

Fixed it, thanks Matt. Recovering from the crud and dragged myself out of bed a bit ago. I need another cup of coffee.

Aha! I thought maybe it was another class of operator that I didn't know about, available only to FJ60 owners.

Default Repeater notes

Chris and Marco,

Here is a link to one of the stickies in the HAM section about repeater etiquette and the like. Try looking this over and asking questions...

welp, tonight I finally got a hold of somebody on 146.460. there were a few guys chatting it up and during a break i threw out my call sign.

anywho, only a short exchange of callsigns and general hellos and goodbyes and I was off, but it was nice to have a good solid contact!

Anyways, thanks again for all the help folks.. this will hopefully become second nature soon!
