Daniel,
The Ft2800 is a great radio and on sale this week at HRO for $125.00, but it does have a big heat sink around it. I got one for my FJ40 and was planning on running it in the runner for Moab, but am having trouble finding a good spot for it in the small runner.

FWIW i really like the removable headset of the 8800. it is more, but the ability to mount most of the radio in the back and use just the remote headset up front is really cool and easy to run. i also like the 2 band monitoring you get. I have the FT8900, but if i had it to do over i would buy the FT 8800.. Just my 2 cents....

HRO also has an open box FT857D for $599.00 (which is the awsome radio that Nathaniel runs)....

Neil.

Ohh, ahh: the 857D is very cool. I fi had not spent so much on my recent Franken-40 mods I would get an 857D...

Default Mounting a 2 meter

I'll be there tomorrow at Genessee. You can see a 2 meter in a 97 Tacoma using the same bolts that hold the mirror on. Also where a CB can go.

I plan to move the 8900 over to my Runner and will mount the face headset up by the mirror like i did on my 80, but don't want to put the whole radio up there.. there is just not that much room in a first gen runner....
The removable face headset just gves so many options for mounting....

The 857D has a removable headset....

Default Bought the setup

It is done.
I got the Yaesu FT-1802M. I liked this better than the 2800 because it is smaller. $1 difference in price. $125. HRO was out of the 1802's so it will get to me next week by UPS. No extra cost.
I got an NMO mount with cable $17 (and it has a "FME" end to be easier to thread through small places, which means I also got a FME to PL-259 adapter, $6). And a rain cap for the NMO mount when the antenna is off, $6.
Diamond NR-72BNMO antenna. Short, external coil, $45. (why is it that one little piece of wire is 1/2 as much as the whole transceiver!).
Total damage: $208.

Mike and Terry helped me out and definitely are familiar with Rising Sun. Mike recently purchased an FJ Cruiser and he may come to a meeting.

I have the 1802 and love it, it is much easier to find a spot for due to its size. It works as well as some of the others I have used.

Not worth starting a new thread over, so going to toss this here. But I bet this guy would take $400 for this Yaesu 817 radio, shipped. http://www.yotatech.com/f109/yaesu-8...-radio-180479/ tempting, but no...
